Imagination, Inspiration & the Law of Attraction

By Jonny Wootton, The BRIM Technique Founder and Director of Training.

Einstein said that imagination was more important than knowledge and it terms of flourishing and evolving – he was right.

It’s widely regarded that the unconscious mind can’t distinguish between a real and imagined feeling. So, with the right guidance and practice, the sky really is your limit.

Imagine you’re a footballer and you are going through a barren spell in front of the goal. You go into each game HOPING that you’ll score a goal. Do you think that hoping you will score will have a desired effect? Hope is a lovely word, but in terms of achievement, it’s not going to get you over the line.

Instead, imagine this…

In the day’s leading up to the game you know you’ve done everything you can in terms of practice and your physical state. You’ve been scoring goals for fun in practice but the thought of performing in front of a full stadium (especially as you haven’t been scoring in games) fills you with dread.

It’s obvious that your mental state is holding you back and your confidence is low.

How are you going to fix it?

You need to get back in the mindset where you EXPECT to score, not just hope. You also need to reduce your performance anxiety, so we go for a two-pronged attack.

First of all, RELAX. Give yourself a big pat on the back for doing everything you consciously can to remedy the situation. Leave you thoughts of football on the field or wherever you have been preparing. Busy yourself with other things you like to do in your down time.

Now what I am going to suggest is better achieved with a suitably qualified therapist (like a BRIM Technique therapist – but you can still make improvements by working on yourself.

Find some time when you won’t be disturbed, maybe lying down on a bed or sitting on a comfortable chair. Close your eyes and begin by focusing on your face notice any tension that has built up and consciously allow your facial muscles to relax. Once this has been achieved allow that feeling to work itself slowly down your body until you arrive at your feet.

After this begin to count down slowly from 10 to one, relaxing more and more with every downward count.

Now this is time then we insert some positive visualization. Imagine it’s game day and you’ve woken feeling incredibly positive after a superb night’s sleep. Immerse yourself in this positive FEELING.
You walk into the changing room with purpose. You’re walking taller than usual and your chest is pumped out. When you run on to the pitch you FEEL incredibly confident. Allow yourself to feel this positive emotion. You take a touch of the ball feel completely in control of it. You look towards the supporters and you just know you’re going to play well. The game kicks off and you immediately do something positive with the ball. The crowd cheers your efforts and your confidence doubles. Now imagine you have a shot at goal and the goalkeeper makes an excellent save. Unlike before, your confidence remains sky high and you are CERTAIN that more chances will come your way. FEEL the positive emotions coursing through your body. Another chance comes and this time you score. See it in as much detail as you can and take ownership of it. So much so that it feels like it has actually happened.

It’s then time to give yourself some carefully worded suggestions. You can use a tried and tested generic one such as; “Every day is every single possible way I am feeling better and better and better.” The suggestions you give yourself should be short and always positively phrased. Feel the emotion as you say the words.

Once you have done this, bring you attention back to your body and your location. Enjoy the feeling of being relaxed. After this, tell yourself that you are going to count up to three and when you reach the number three you will open your eyes. You will open them feeling wide awake and incredibly positive.

Working with SMI and a BRIM trainer WILL help you hone your positive psychology and we can add a lot more to this with anchors some other extremely valuable techniques.
