THE PSYCHOLOGY OF STOPPING SMOKING / VAPING

Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy in Wakefield: Why Most Smokers Find Quitting Difficult (And How a Different Approach Can Make It Easier)

by Jonny Wootton, D.Hyp

If you’ve tried to stop smoking before and failed, you’re certainly not alone.

Many smokers in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and across the UK and USA have made multiple attempts to quit. Some manage a few days, others a few weeks or months, and many eventually find themselves reaching for another cigarette or vape despite genuinely wanting to stop.

The question is why?

After helping more than 200 people become non-smokers, I’ve found that most people struggle for two key reasons:

  1. They believe stopping smoking will be difficult.
  2. They don’t have a compelling emotional reason to stay stopped in the moment.

My stop smoking hypnotherapy programme addresses both issues in a single one-hour session using a unique two-part approach developed by world-renowned hypnotherapist Ron Kelly.

The result?

More than 90% of my clients leave as happy non-smokers.

The Biggest Myth About Smoking

When most people think about smoking, they think about addiction.

They’ve heard for years that nicotine is incredibly addictive. They know people who have struggled to quit. They may have tried several times themselves.

As a result, many smokers begin their quit attempt already convinced that it will be a battle.

This belief creates a powerful expectation.

Every time they think about smoking, they interpret the feeling as a craving.

Every time something feels slightly uncomfortable, they assume it’s withdrawal.

Every stressful situation becomes evidence that they “need” a cigarette.

But here’s an interesting question:

How often do smokers think about smoking when they are completely engaged in something else?

When they’re absorbed in a conversation, focused on work, playing sport, watching a film, or enjoying time with family, the desire to smoke often disappears completely.

The urge tends to return when they think about smoking.

In other words, much of the struggle isn’t the cigarette itself.

It’s the belief system surrounding it.

Why Some People Restart Smoking Months or Years Later

Many people successfully quit smoking for weeks, months or even years.

Then something happens.

Stress at work.

A family crisis.

A relationship breakdown.

A difficult life event.

At that moment, they reconnect smoking with comfort, relaxation or relief.

The cigarette hasn’t actually solved the problem.

But because they have previously associated smoking with feeling better, they return to an old habit.

This is why changing the way someone thinks about smoking is often just as important as stopping the physical behaviour itself.

Part One: Changing the Belief System

The first part of my stop smoking session focuses on helping clients see smoking differently.

When people understand how habits are formed and maintained, they often experience a significant shift in how they view cigarettes and vaping.

Instead of feeling controlled by smoking, they begin to feel empowered.

Instead of believing they are fighting an unbeatable enemy, they begin to realise they are capable of living perfectly well without cigarettes.

This change in perception is often the turning point.

Once somebody genuinely sees themselves as someone who can live comfortably without smoking, quitting becomes far easier.

The Second Problem: Most Reasons for Quitting Feel Too Far Away

Most smokers tell themselves they want to quit because:

  • They want better health.
  • They want to save money.
  • They want to be around for their family.
  • They want to reduce future health risks.

These are all excellent reasons.

The problem is they don’t always help in the moment.

Imagine a man called Jack.

Jack has stopped smoking for a few days.

Then he receives some upsetting news.

He’s stressed.

He’s emotional.

He’s tempted to buy cigarettes.

At that moment, thoughts about better health years from now may not feel powerful enough.

Saving money may not feel important enough.

The benefits seem distant.

The cigarette feels immediate.

This is where many quit attempts fail.

Part Two: Creating Immediate Benefits Through Hypnosis

The second part of my stop smoking session uses hypnosis to create positive emotional associations with becoming a non-smoker.

Rather than focusing on deprivation, we focus on gain.

Clients are guided to experience feelings such as:

  • Pride
  • Achievement
  • Freedom
  • Calmness
  • Confidence
  • Relief
  • Self-control

These positive emotional responses become linked to being a non-smoker.

Instead of feeling like they have given something up, they begin to feel they have gained something valuable.

Many clients report feeling lighter, happier and more confident immediately after the session.

For many, this is the missing piece.

Quitting finally feels worthwhile right now.

Not next year.

Not in ten years.

Today.

Why Hypnotherapy Can Be So Effective for Smoking and Vaping

Smoking and vaping are largely automatic behaviours.

Most smokers don’t consciously decide to smoke every cigarette.

The behaviour has become habitual.

Hypnotherapy works by helping people change the thoughts, beliefs and emotional patterns that support the habit.

When the unconscious mind begins supporting the decision to quit rather than resisting it, the process often feels surprisingly natural.

This is why many clients are amazed at how little they think about smoking after their session.

One Hour Could Change Your Life

My stop smoking and stop vaping session lasts approximately one hour.

During that time we:

  • Challenge limiting beliefs about smoking.
  • Build confidence in your ability to quit.
  • Remove the fear associated with stopping.
  • Create powerful positive feelings around being smoke-free.
  • Help you see yourself as a happy non-smoker.

I’ve used this approach to help more than 200 people stop smoking and vaping.

Many arrive feeling sceptical.

Many leave wondering why they didn’t do it years earlier.
