Couch the Coach

Helping the often forgotten coach thrive and enjoy positive mental health.

There has been steep rise in top-level sportsmen and women seeking the assistance of psychologists and other mental health professionals in recent years and this trend will likely continue, if not grow.

The performer is undoubtedly under pressure, but another key player is often overlooked and this is the role of the sports coach or manager.

Take Premier League football in the UK for example. Take a look at a picture of a manager when they are unveiled in their new position and compare this to how they look a few years later.  Can you see a difference?

A classic example would be former Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan. Fresh faced with mostly dark hair on taking the job. It wasn’t long, however, that his hair had turned white and he was clearly feeling the pressure of such a pressured job.

Take a look at this Kevin Keegan interview: “I will love it!” – Kevin Keegan’s infamous rant – YouTube

Couch The Coach is a strictly confidential service support service the has been created to help the coach at every turn. Sometimes this can be a coach simply unloading the pressure they feel and getting some issues off their chest.

Or it can be a skilled therapist helping the coach in other ways.

Generally speaking, two types of coach contact SMI for assistance.

  1. The forward-thinking coach looking for that extra 10% and leaving no stone unturned in their quest to find it.
  2. A coach that is under pressure and needs help to overcome the many obstacles faced.

At SMI we have the tools, skills, training and experience to help.

We utilize The BRIM Technique in order to do this as well as SMI’s Leadership, Development and Reinvention program.
